The EU parliament has reached an agreement for the conditions for the abolishment of the visa obligation for both countries, which enables citizens from the Ukraine and Georgia to enter the EU without visa, up to 90 days. This does not constitute a work permit. Georgia and the Ukraine were 51st and 52nd country that were granted these rights. The visa freedom is valid for the Schengen region and thus also concerns Switzerland, like Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. The agreement is based on the idea that this visa freedom for both states can be suspended according to circumstances, for instance when the duration of stay, the number of travelers or the number of submitted asylum requests substantially exceed the expectations. In this case, free entry is suspended for 9 months, which also occurs upon decision from the EU commission. The EU parliament needs to approve the proposal in order for the visa freedom for the Ukraine and Georgia to become valid. This positive development is due to the work of both countries, who limit corruption and instate an effective border control.
Swiss citizens who enter the Ukraine do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. This is also the case for Georgia. Russia requires a visa, just like before.
